The story opens in a London hotel with the formidable matriarch, Khunnai Lumyai, complaining about the uncomfortable and unfamiliar shoes she has been forced to squeeze her feet into on her trip to Europe. Accompanying her is her charming and intelligent adoptive daughter, Nat, a student teacher at the local college. As they are walking down Oxford Street in search of a bookshop, they stop and ask for directions from a good-looking young man who turns out to be a Thai student by the name of Santithorn, who is close to completing his PhD in London, and whom they find out is acquainted with Thewika, another member of wealthy people in their area. At last, Santithorn proposes to Nat and vows to remain on the plantation in Nakhon Pathom for the rest of his life to the disapproval of his parents. However, the final humiliation for Suntri is when Khunnai Lumyai shows her the family heirlooms and reveals that her family are, in fact, barefoot billionaires.
